This cake isn’t your traditional cut and serve cake it is actually a dessert that you spoon into a bowl, hence the name spoon cake! The cake will bake up and then there is a pudding like layer at the bottom, be sure to get to the bottom when serving! So good!

This recipe comes from the Gooseberry Patch Slow Cooker Christmas Favorites Cookbook.

Rocky Road Chocolate Spoon Cake

The recipe uses a German chocolate cake mix, which offers the perfect not so sweet chocolate taste. No need for icing, the topping of the marshmallows, chocolate chips and pecans just might be my favorite part!

I made Rocky Road Chocolate Spoon Cake for Christmas dessert. It was very good but did not have a pudding at the bottom. Went to church put it on 4 hours and came back to a finished product. My question is you said 3.5 or 4 hour cook. Maybe my should have only the three and half so there would be a more of a pudding in the bottom. Suggestions????? Thank you for your blog and ideas.

    1. Hi Barbara,

It’s really hard to say. I have made it several times and there’s always about 1/2 to 1 inch of pudding on the bottom. My guess would be it has something to do with the size or shape of crock pot you used. Happy New year!
