This recipe comes from my Aunt and according to the recipe card she got it from my other aunt, both farmwives and awesome cooks! I have had these at multiple family functions over the years and have made them multiple times since I got the recipe. They go great with My Aunt’s Cheese Potato Casserole.

If you are looking for a tomato sauce ham ball recipe my friend Jennifer has one for you, Old Fashioned Iowa Ham Balls.

Depending on where you live the availability of “ham loaf mix” may very, I haven’t found it anywhere around here but my Aunt’s have a place you can get it (but we live in different states). I am able to get ground ham in the lunch meat aisle at our local grocery store. This is what I use. Other people I know grind their own ham through a meat grinder or food processor. This would be a good way to use up leftover ham. The ground ham I get requires more ground pork to make the mix work. Otherwise you can always ask your butcher to make you a mix and ratio would be 2/3 ground cured ham and 1/3 ground pork.

How to Make Ham Balls

Ham Balls With a Brown Sugar Glaze is a family favorite recipe that can be made with leftover ham.

Making Ham Balls is very much like making meatloaf, the moisture of the mix is important. You might have to play with the meat ratio to get a blend that easily makes and holds the ball shape depending on if you can get the ham loaf mix or not.

  • In a medium bowl soak bread in milk for about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in eggs.
  • Add meat and mix together.
  • Shape meat mixture into balls and place in a greased 9×13 inch pan.
  • In a bowl mix together glaze ingredients.
  • Pour glaze over ham balls.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours.
  • Baste occasionally with sauce.

I like to use a big scoop to make the balls. If you use dry bread crumbs you may have to add some more milk.

  1. We have always made ham balls a tradition fit either thanksgiving or Xmas. The only thing I would add is hamburger to the mix is always in our recipe handed down from my mother in law. My recipe: 1 lb. hamburger, 1 1/2 ground ham, 1/2lb. Ground pork, 1 egg, 1 C milk, 1/2 -1C cracker crumbs very fine. Mix all together and make the glaze sauce- cook for 1 1/2 hours checking to not burn and baste often with sauce

        1. I wondered about the long cook time also. Ham loaf mix is a pre-cooked meat (usually) and other than egg, nothing I see should make them take that long. As small as the pictured ham balls are, I can’t see it taking more than 30 mins or so. I can cook a raw meat, 1.5 lb meat loaf in an hour to 165F at 350 degrees so……very curious as to the long time in the recipe.

          1. You can cook less but the longer cook time is for the glaze to thicken up and get sticky on the ham balls.

I live in Iowa where Fareway grocery stores carry ham loaf in their meat case. I buy it often and theirs isn’t cooked. It usually has more ground pork then ham in it and is very much raw! I can’t imagine mixing it with other ingredients and forming balls if it were already cooked.
