Calico Baked Beans with hamburger and bacon is the perfect recipe for a crowd. It is a must at all of our family gatherings!
My mom got this recipe from my aunt and we grew up calling it PA Beans because she lives in Pennsylvania. The original recipe use to be printed on the back of the can of Rebar Butter Beans can. I don’t believe you can buy that brand any longer or at least not around here.
If you are looking for a more traditional baked bean recipe try this one!
Calico Baked Beans with Hamburger and Bacon
This recipe makes a lot and is perfect to bring to pitch in or potlucks!
I like using a dutch oven in this recipe because you then only have to use one pan, less dish washing!
Calico Baked Beans is a great versatile recipe that you can adapt to your liking by add more beans, etc. The original recipe called for 2 can’s of Kidney Beans (they aren’t my favorite) so I cut it back to only 1 can. In the summer my mom would often times add green beans from the garden.
Yes, you can make this recipe in the crock pot but I prefer the taste when it is cooked in the oven. The sauce gets stickier and thicker which is exactly how I like it!

I don’t have vinegar. Does it ABSOLUTELY need it?
Made this today. Added a total of 8 different types of beans. Also added some peppers. They’re still cooking but they smell delicious.
Family favorite…made in the crockpot and I do freeze the leftovers (if there are any).
This is so good! My husband LOVES it! And he’s a picky eater. Thanks for this recipe.
Made this for work and there was none left over!
Do you think the left over could be frozen? Or would it be mushy once thawed?
Yes you can freeze but the texture will change a little.
I’ve been making this for years, but since it’s so hot I put it all in the crockpot. My family can’t get enough of it!
Made this today…delicious!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back and sharing your experience!
