First you need a big helper to help you get the fire started!!

Double check the recipe!

Start by spraying the inside of the pie iron with non-stick spray.

Place tortillas on both sides.

Fill with seasoned ground beef and cheese.

Top with the other shell.

Close the pie iron.

Cook over medium coals until tortilla is crispy.
That’s a pretty nice foot there… haha

1 – oz. package taco seasoning mix
12 5-inch tortillas

  1. My family and I have been making fruit pies in a round PIE IRON since the 60’s. Now we use mostly the double design and we are way more ambitious, making muffaletta sandwiches and pigs in a blanket. Really great campfire meals. Keep on camping!

  2. Looks like a great alternative to just bread but PLEASE don’t refer to tortillas as “shells”. It is akin to calling pasta “noodles”. 😉

  3. We made these while camping and they were a big hit! We liked that everyone could personalize their own – inside and out!

  4. I’m still learning to use my pie iron…still burning most things. A good idea would be to make the taco meat ahead of time and freeze. It helps keep the cooler cold and no mess at the camp fire

    1. The key to not burning your mt. pies is to pre-heat the pie iron before you fill with your food. Just plac the empty pie iron in the hot coals for a few minutes to warm it up. Sort of like pre-heating your oven before baking…

  5. You pie iron looks like a supersized Toas-tite! I love it and yes – it’s great for camping! I Love the idea of tortillas instead of bread. Going to have to try that with my toas-tite. Great post!

  6. You can make peach, I’m sure – my family loves to make fruit pies. They put bread, then pie filling, marshmallows, and then another slice of bread in theirs. I bet you could also do it with the tortillas and brush them with butter, then cinnamon/sugar.

My own personal fave is the pizza variety, but this taco one looks good, too!

    1. Yes, you can make peach, cherry, apple…Take fresh white bread, butter one side and put the butter side down on the pie iron. Put a spoonful of pie filling on the bread, and top with another piece of buttered bread, butter side out. Toast on your campfire. I imagine you could make this with refrigerated pie crust, but the bread works well.

    2. Yes you can. We make the fruit ones and we also make pizza ones in our pie irons. Now I want to try the taco ones. I know me, my son and his girlfriend would love them.
